The Law Commission wants unmarried couples who live together for at least five years to have rights to their partner's estate if they die without producing a will.
Under the plans, couples with children would inherit all their partner's assets if they were together for two years.

The Commission states that their proposals "reflect the growing prevalence and public acceptance of cohabitation".

It also proposes that spouses should be entitled to their partner's entire estate and not have to share with other family members when the amount is more than £250 000, as is currently the case when no will is left.
